Spain turned two early chances into a 2-0 win over the United States on Saturday at Audi Field, handing the USWNT a sharp test ahead of World Cup qualifying. Patricia Guijarro struck in the third minute before Eva Navarro doubled the advantage in the 14th, forcing the Americans to chase the match almost from the opening whistle.

The score did not fully reflect the pressure the United States created after Spain’s fast start. The USWNT finished with 13 shots and put 10 on target, but Spain goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares and the defense protected the clean sheet. Spain generated only three shots on goal, making its efficiency in the opening half the difference.

Mallory Swanson entered in the 66th minute for her first U.S. appearance in 710 days and became the 19th mother to play for the national team. Ashley Sanchez also returned as a second-half substitute, giving coach Emma Hayes additional attacking options even though the Americans could not turn their possession and chances into a goal.

The teams meet again Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. That quick rematch gives the United States an immediate opportunity to correct the defensive mistakes and finishing problems that shaped the first game.
