Bay FC made one of the biggest moves of the NWSL offseason, acquiring midfielder Claire Hutton from the Kansas City Current in exchange for $1.1 million in intra-league transfer funds, the club announced Tuesday.
Bay FC called the fee a historic figure — one of the highest transfer fees between NWSL clubs and among the highest for a women’s player worldwide — as the 20-year-old arrives in the Bay coming off a 2025 NWSL Best XI First Team season.
The deal was part of a two-step day for Kansas City, which also acquired Croix Bethune from the Washington Spirit. Reuters reported Bay FC’s $1.1 million went to Kansas City, and the Current then sent $1 million to Washington as part of the Bethune move.
Bay FC is clearly signaling they want to control games through the middle. The San Francisco Standard reported Bay FC’s new leadership group laid out a specific plan for how Hutton fits into the spine of the team — particularly after a season where the club struggled to consistently dictate matches through the midfield. The same report described Bay coming off a year with four wins and the league’s lowest goal total, with the club expecting an immediate impact after paying one of the largest intra-league fees in NWSL history.

Head coach Emma Coates emphasized Hutton’s ability on both sides of the ball, calling her “tight on the ball” with the mobility and physical presence to break up play — and saying the club believes she has the potential to become one of the best midfielders in the world.
Bay FC’s release highlighted just how complete Hutton’s 2025 season was: 25 regular-season appearances (22 starts), two assists, and a key role as Kansas City lifted the NWSL Shield.
Stat-wise, Bay FC pointed to Hutton finishing top 10 league-wide in duels won (153) and successful tackles (49), while winning possession 170 times — part of a Current team that posted a league-record 16 clean sheets.
She was also a 2025 NWSL Midfielder of the Year nominee, adding to the resume that made her such a high-value target.
Hutton’s national team rise is already ahead of schedule.

Bay FC noted she has 13 senior USWNT appearances, scored once (July 2 vs. Canada), and captained the U.S. for the first time in the most recent window — taking the armband late in a January win over Paraguay — becoming the youngest player to captain the USWNT in the modern era, per the club.
Hutton said Bay FC’s ambition and Coates’ detailed vision were major reasons the move felt right, adding she’s excited to join a group “as we compete at the highest level while winning championships.”
Reuters also reported Hutton considered overseas options during the process, but ultimately felt Bay FC aligned with what she wanted to build.
Bottom line: This is Bay FC paying top dollar for a player they believe can anchor the midfield now — and become a face of the club long-term.
