Bay FC’s strong start to the afternoon ended in frustration on Sunday, April 5, as the club fell 2-0 to the Washington Spirit at PayPal Park in front of a crowd of 10,237. After a scoreless first half, the match turned in the 57th minute when a tough sequence in Bay’s own box resulted in an own goal credited to Brooklyn Courtnall, giving Washington the breakthrough it had been pushing for.
For a while, Bay looked like it might respond right away. Alex Pfeiffer nearly found an equalizer shortly after the opener, but her effort was denied, and that moment ended up being one of Bay’s best chances of the day. Jordan Silkowitz also kept Bay within reach with a number of big saves, finishing with nine as Washington continued to apply pressure deep into the second half.
The Spirit controlled much of the match statistically, finishing with 20 shots, 10 shots on target, 61.6 percent possession, and 12 corner kicks. Bay, meanwhile, was limited to six total shots and just one on frame, struggling to create enough going forward against a Washington side that looked more comfortable as the match wore on.
Washington put the result away in the 86th minute when substitute Gift Monday pounced on a rebound and buried the insurance goal just two minutes after entering the match. The win was the Spirit’s first of the season and sent them into the international break with momentum, while Bay was left to reflect on a match where one unlucky bounce shifted everything.
