The San Jose Earthquakes moved on with a 2-0 win over Phoenix Rising at PayPal Park, and the biggest storyline was who delivered the goals. Nick Fernandez opened the scoring, while Jack Jasinski added the second, sending the Quakes into the Round of 16 with a professional result at home. U.S. Soccer’s match report also noted that Fernandez’s goal was assisted by Timo Werner in his Open Cup debut, while Jasinski’s finish came off an assist from Fernandez.

What made the night even better for San Jose was that both scorers have strong Earthquakes II ties. Fernandez has featured with Quakes II and was on the scoresheet in their 4-1 win over LAFC 2 earlier this season, while Jasinski was listed in San Jose’s 2026 Earthquakes II roster announcement as part of the club’s MLS NEXT Pro setup. That made this one feel like a real club-development night, with younger names stepping up on a bigger stage.

For the Quakes, that is the kind of Open Cup performance you want. The team moved on, the clean sheet held up, and two players from the club’s wider development pathway ended up writing the story. Fernandez and Jasinski did more than just score — they made a statement.
