Oakland Roots opened the 2026 USL Championship season with a road win in a familiar NorCal rivalry, beating Monterey Bay FC 1-0 at Cardinale Stadium on Saturday night in Ryan Martin’s first match as head coach. The breakthrough didn’t come until late, but when it did, it came from a new face. In the 85th minute, offseason addition Mark Fisher scored on his Roots debut, controlling a corner delivery just outside the box, taking a touch to beat his marker, then curling a left-footed shot inside the right post to put Oakland ahead for good.

Roots’ match report described a patient, possession-oriented start that limited Monterey Bay’s ability to build chances early, though both teams showed some “first-game rust” around the box as the score stayed 0-0 at halftime.
Monterey Bay’s recap echoed the tone from the other side: MBFC credited goalkeeper Fernando Delgado for keeping them level early, including multiple saves and interventions on set pieces in the opening minutes.

The game swung on a couple of critical sequences in the second half. First, Monterey Bay nearly found a breakthrough in the 67th minute when a shot rebounded off Roots goalkeeper Raphael Spiegel, but newcomer Michael Edwards cleared the follow-up off the goal line to keep it scoreless.
Then Oakland thought they had the opener in the 78th minute when Danny Trejo headed home, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside — a moment that briefly felt like the kind of call that can haunt you in an opener.
Instead, Roots stayed on the front foot, won another dead-ball moment, and Fisher delivered the deciding strike.
The match was played at Cardinale Stadium in Seaside in clear conditions, with an announced attendance of 4,240.
ESPN’s match stats listed Monterey Bay at 39.2% possession, reflecting Oakland’s control for much of the night. With three points secured, Roots now turn to the Oakland return. The club’s match report noted the home opener will be at the Oakland Coliseum against New Mexico United on Saturday, March 14.
For an opening night on the road — New coach, new pieces, one big moment — and a shutout win to take back to The Town.
