QUEENS, NY — Gotham FC delivered a historic night for women’s soccer in New York, defeating the Washington Spirit 1-0 in the inaugural Queens Classic at Citi Field before a record-setting crowd of 42,175 fans. The attendance marked the largest crowd ever for a women’s sporting event in New York City and the second-largest in National Women’s Soccer League history.
Rose Lavelle provided the decisive moment in the 37th minute, producing a composed finish that lifted Gotham to victory. Goalkeeper Ann Katrin Berger preserved the clean sheet with several key saves as Gotham held off a determined Spirit attack throughout the second half.
The match also featured the return of Australian star Sam Kerr, who made her first appearance for Gotham since rejoining the club. Her entrance energized an already electric atmosphere inside Citi Field as fans celebrated a milestone event for women’s sports in New York.
Beyond the result, the Queens Classic highlighted the continued growth of the NWSL, bringing together thousands of supporters for the league’s first ever match at Citi Field.
