The San Jose Earthquakes bounced back in a big way on Saturday night, beating the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 at BC Place to move to 4-1-0 on the season and jump right back into the top of the Western Conference mix.
The difference came on the final play of first-half stoppage time. Midfielder Beau Leroux stepped into a loose clearance, won the ball off Vancouver’s Cheikh Sabaly, and unleashed a long-range strike from well outside the box that beat goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka for an unassisted opener in the 45+2’.

After the break, the spotlight shifted from the scorer to the survival job. The match recap noted both clubs’ German stars — San Jose’s Timo Werner and Vancouver’s Thomas Müller — entered after intermission, but it was Daniel and the Quakes’ back line that carried the night, absorbing sustained pressure and “multiple barrages” to protect the clean sheet. ESPN’s match stats show Vancouver held the majority of possession (61.4%) and put six shots on goal on frame, with Daniel forced into a busy closing stretch.

San Jose’s win also handed Vancouver a first: the Quakes became the first team to take points from the Whitecaps this season, and the match marked the first time Vancouver had been shut out in MLS play in 2026. With the shutout, San Jose now has four clean sheets in five matches, already one shy of matching last season’s total, per the club.
The result was played in front of 21,261 fans at BC Place, as the Earthquakes left Canada with a road statement and a simple reminder that their early-season defensive jump is real.
San Jose returns home next to face San Diego FC on April 4 at PayPal Park.
