San Jose is moving toward its first attacking pickup of the winter. Paul Rothrock is in advanced conversations with the Earthquakes, and league sources view San Jose as the current front runner. A few other clubs are still involved, but the Quakes sit closest to securing him. Seattle has not closed the door on a return, but the choice sits with Rothrock and what he wants for the next step of his career.

Rothrock’s story helps explain the growing interest around him. He grew up in Seattle’s Capitol Hill area and built an early reputation as a productive wide player at Lakeside School, where he produced 33 goals and 43 assists. He later moved through the Sounders Academy, then played college soccer before earning a spot in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. Toronto FC drafted him, and he developed through USL and MLS NEXT Pro before Seattle brought him back into its system.

His rise with the Sounders came fast. He scored on his debut during a short-term loan, then added more goals across his first three MLS appearances. Seattle used him for energy on the wings, service into the box, and pressing from the front. The club kept him in rotation through league play and tournaments.

Rothrock’s biggest moment arrived in Leagues Cup. Seattle lifted the 2025 title with a 3 to 0 win over Inter Miami, and Rothrock delivered one of the goals in the final. His movement into the box and clean finish stood out, and his performance helped raise his value across MLS.

San Jose views him as a fit for the new direction. The team needs wider threats who stretch the field, create chances for Chicho Arango, and work in transition. Rothrock checks those boxes with his work rate, timing in the final third, and willingness to attack defenders off the ball.

Talks remain active. No agreement yet. Multiple teams still track his situation, but the momentum points toward San Jose.
