Bay FC opened the 2026 NWSL season with a 2-1 win over expansion side Denver Summit FC on Saturday at PayPal Park, giving new head coach Emma Coates a victory in her first league match in charge and snapping the club’s long winless stretch from last season.
The match swung on a high-energy first half that featured three goals, a red card, and an immediate impact performance from 18-year-old forward Alex Pfeiffer, who scored once and assisted the winner.
Bay FC struck first in the 8th minute when Pfeiffer carried a ricocheted pass down the right flank, cut inside, and finished into the left corner for her first goal with the club. Denver responded quickly with a landmark moment of its own: the Summit’s first goal in club history came in the 20th minute, as Janine Sonis delivered service to Melissa Kössler, who headed home at the near post.
The defining moment arrived minutes later. Denver captain Sonis was sent off in the first half after video review, leaving the Summit to play the remainder of their inaugural NWSL match down a player. Bay FC took advantage soon after, retaking the lead in the 30th minute when Pfeiffer found Joelle Anderson at the top of the box and Anderson buried a left-footed finish that held up as the match-winner.

From there, Bay FC managed the second half with control rather than chaos. The club’s recap noted Bay held over 70% possession after the break, and Coates said the opening win mattered not just for points, but as validation of the style the team has been building toward. The crowd turnout matched the moment as well, with 13,110 in attendance for the season opener.
The win also offered an early look at what Bay FC is trying to become under Coates. The San Francisco Standard highlighted how newcomer Claire Hutton anchored the midfield, and described Bay’s transitions as sharper than they were a year ago as the club worked to play more through the center instead of leaning on direct, long-ball sequences.
Pfeiffer wasn’t the only new face to log a first appearance: Bay FC also noted debuts for Anouk Denton and Keira Barry as the club continues integrating a reshaped roster in Year 3.
Bay FC’s next match is another high-profile California date, hosting Angel City FC on March 21 at PayPal Park.
