The NWSL entered its October international break with two significant moments at opposite ends of the standings. San Diego Wave FC secured a place in the 2026 playoffs, while Racing Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo made her long-awaited return to league action.

San Diego clinched with a 2-1 road victory over the Orlando Pride on October 2. Lia Godfrey scored in the fourth minute and Gia Corley doubled the advantage in the 22nd before Orlando responded through a second-half Barbra Banda penalty. The result sent the Wave to the postseason for the fourth time in the club’s five seasons.

DeMelo’s return carried meaning beyond the standings. Racing had announced a contract extension through 2027, with an option for 2028, before she became available against Utah Royals FC. Her return followed more than a year away from NWSL competition after a medical emergency in September 2025, marking an important personal milestone as the regular season approaches its closing stretch.
