CARSON, CALIF — Club America and Columbus Crew face each other at Dignity Health Sports Park for a spot in the Leagues Cup semifinals. Although playing in the United States, the atmosphere and environment were definitely in Las Aguilas’ favor. What started as an even match ended up in a 2-0 win for Club America, making it their first semifinal qualification in the Leagues Cup.

The first half of this match was filled with action. During the opening minutes, captain Henry Martin scores in the 3’. The goal ends up getting ruled off for offside but set the tone for what was coming up. Club America ends up scoring after a quick counterattack. Veiga ends up getting the first goal of the night after a Rodriguez assist. Columbus was not afraid to test Cota. Columbus was close to leveling the match after Ruvalcaba’s shot hit the woodwork. Columbus had the best chances during the first half, but nothing Club America goalkeeper Cota could not deal with, including saving a penalty from Columbus’ Mendez. In the last seconds of added time, Rodriguez makes it 2-0 with an incredible solo goal.

After an even first half where both teams had clear goal-scoring chances, the second half was dominated by Club America. Although having the best chances in the second half, Club America did not find the third goal. Columbus also had their chances, but Cota’s masterclass performance kept the clean sheet. Some key players who made a big impact in the match were Club America’s Bryan Rodriguez and Rodolfo Cota. Rodriguez finished with an assist and a goal, while Cota had 8 saves and a clean sheet.

Las Aguilas are set to face Monterrey at Dignity Health Sports Park for a spot in the final.
