NWSL Matchweek 18 delivered statement performances, late drama and several moments that could influence the developing playoff race.
No player made a bigger impact than San Diego Wave forward Trinity Byars. The 23-year-old contributed to all four of San Diego’s goals in a 4–2 victory over Utah Royals, finishing the match with two goals and two assists.
Byars opened the scoring just four minutes into the match before setting up Melanie Barcenas later in the first half. Her performance displayed everything that makes her one of the league’s most exciting young attackers: speed, directness and the ability to create opportunities for herself and her teammates.
Ashley Sanchez also continued her outstanding season with the North Carolina Courage. Sanchez scored her 12th goal of the campaign during a 2–1 victory over Boston Legacy, moving herself to the front of the Golden Boot race.
The weekend also produced an important moment for Bay FC. Italian forward Cristiana Girelli scored her first NWSL goal, converting a late opportunity to help Bay secure a victory over the Houston Dash. The goal could become a turning point as Girelli continues adjusting to a new league and environment.
Elsewhere, Gotham FC extended its unbeaten run to nine matches following a scoreless draw with Angel City. The Portland Thorns also collected an important 1–0 victory over Denver Summit behind Sophia Wilson’s 10th goal of the season.
As the playoff picture begins to form, individual performances are becoming increasingly important. Matchweek 18 belonged to the players who stepped forward when their teams needed them—and nobody influenced a match more than Byars.
