One of the biggest rivalries in world soccer is coming to Oakland.
Club América and Chivas de Guadalajara will meet in a special edition of El Clásico de México at the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday, October 4. The international friendly is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., bringing two of Mexico’s most historic and widely supported clubs to the Bay Area.
The rivalry represents more than a matchup between two successful teams. América and Chivas carry different identities, traditions and fan bases that have shaped Mexican soccer for generations.
Chivas has historically built its identity around fielding Mexican players, while América has become known for its star power, international recruitment and championship expectations. Every meeting carries history, pride and a rivalry that extends far beyond the field.
Bringing the matchup to Oakland creates an opportunity for Northern California supporters to experience that atmosphere without traveling to Mexico. The Bay Area is home to a large Mexican and Mexican American community, and both clubs have supporters throughout the region.
The match also marks another important moment in the Oakland Coliseum’s growing soccer history. Oakland Roots SC invested approximately $700,000 to convert the field from a baseball configuration into a soccer venue in 2025. That investment helped make it possible for the stadium to host major matches and international clubs.
For a venue long associated with the Athletics and Raiders, events like El Clásico de México are helping build a new chapter for the Coliseum. The stadium is becoming a place where Oakland’s soccer community and cultural identity can be represented on a larger stage.
A Fiesta Futbolera will begin outside the venue at 1 p.m., several hours before kickoff. The pregame celebration will give supporters an opportunity to gather before the rivalry moves inside the stadium.
A ticket presale is scheduled to begin Thursday, August 27, at 10 a.m. Public sales will open Friday, August 28, at 10 a.m. through the event’s official ticketing platforms.
Although the game is a friendly rather than an official Liga MX fixture, meetings between América and Chivas rarely feel meaningless. When the two clubs walk onto the field in Oakland, the colors, chants and emotion surrounding Mexico’s biggest rivalry will follow them.
For one night, the Oakland Coliseum will become the home of El Clásico de México.
